    Este ensaio apresenta um estudo sobre a articulação da biografia coletiva dos fundadores do Instituto Histórico e Geográfico Brasileiro e de sua Revista com a política cultural do Estado imperial brasileiro, em que se observa, sobretudo, como o perfil dos membros do Instituto conformava determinada figura de intelectual através de sua rede de sociabilidades, sua mentalidade civilizatória e a cultura política de sua geração. O objetivo é evidenciar que o significado do intelectual no contexto da fundação do IHGB se define através de um discurso que une a fala em nome da razão, da humanidade e da civilização, à fala em nome do Estado e da nação.This essay presents a study on the articulation of the collective biography of the Brazilian Historical and Geographical Institute’s founders and of its journal with the cultural politic of the Brazilian emperor state, in which is observed, above all, how the Institute members’ profile fitted certain image of intellectual through its sociability network, its civilizing mentality and the political culture of its generation. The objective is to outline that the meaning of the intellectual in the context of the foundation of the Brazilian Historical and Geographical Institute is defined through a discourse that unify the speech on the behalf of reason, of humanity  and of civilization, with the speech on the behalf of the state and of the nation

    History, Memory and Fiction: What Boundaries?

    20th century sociologists and historians established a clear distinction between history and memory. But in the last decades our attention has been called to what exists in common between these two fields that do not always coincide. In this article, I intend to problematize the complex relationship between history and memory: the critical demands of history writing and the register of the various memories (individual memory, collective memory), also equating the relationship between memory and -forgetfulness. And what about history? What distinguishes it from fiction? To what extent are memories permeable to imagination? We all fictionalize our past. Could we reduce the writing of history to a narrative dimension

    Symmetry Reduction Enables Model Checking of More Complex Emergent Behaviours of Swarm Navigation Algorithms

    The emergent global behaviours of robotic swarms are important to achieve their navigation task goals. These emergent behaviours can be verified to assess their correctness, through techniques like model checking. Model checking exhaustively explores all possible behaviours, based on a discrete model of the system, such as a swarm in a grid. A common problem in model checking is the state-space explosion that arises when the states of the model are numerous. We propose a novel implementation of symmetry reduction, in the form of encoding navigation algorithms relatively with respect to a reference, based on the symmetrical properties of swarms in grids. We applied the relative encoding to a swarm navigation algorithm, Alpha, modelled for the NuSMV model checker. A comparison of the state-space and verification results with an absolute (or global) and a relative encoding of the Alpha algorithm highlights the advantages of our approach, allowing model checking larger grid sizes and number of robots, and consequently, verifying more complex emergent behaviours. For example, a property was verified for a grid with 3 robots and a maximum allowed size of 8x8 cells in a global encoding, whereas this size was increased to 16x16 using a relative encoding. Also, the time to verify a property for a swarm of 3 robots in a 6x6 grid was reduced from almost 10 hours to only 7 minutes.     A Formal Method for Modeling, Verification and Synthesis of Embedded Reactive Systems

    Embedded reactive systems are now invisible and everywhere, and are adopted, for instance, to monitor and control critical tasks in cars, airplanes, traffic, and industrial plants. However, the increasing amount of new functionalities being moved to software leads to difficulties in verifying the design correctness. In this context, we propose a novel design method called BARE Model, which is a formal abstraction to design, verify and synthesize software in embedded reactive applications. The method consists in designing the application using an extension of the well-known finite state machine, called X-machine. We thus propose to translate this model to a tabular data structure, which is a kind of state transition table augmented with memory input, memory output, and condition (or guard). This tabular structure may be automatically translated to the input of the NuSMV model checker in order to verify the system’s properties. We also propose a runtime environment to execute the system (expressed as a tabular data structure) in a specific platform. In this way, we can convert the high-level specification into executable code that runs on a target platform. To show the practical usability of our proposed method, we experimented it with the Envirotrack case study. The experiment shows that the proposed method is able to not only model the system, but also to verify safety and liveness properties, and synthesize executable code of real-world applications

    Land use analysis for slope classes in watershed using GIS analysis

    The objective of this work was to survey the land use at Limoeiro watershed placed on the Presidente Prudente and Álvares Machado counties in the West of the São Paulo State. The related survey was effected using an image of TM sensor of the satellite Landsat 7 and the Geographic Information System Idrisi. The result of the survey was statistically analyzed through the kappa index. After that, it was digitalized the level curves of the watershed which were interpolated to supply the slope classes of all the studied area. Subsequently, the slope spaces were crossed with the land use with the purpose of verifying the main land uses in each slope class. It was observed that cattle and the urban area are the main ground occupations in the watershed. It was still observed that the predominant slope spaces in the studied area are those between 3 and 12 percent.El objetivo de este trabajo fue la evaluación del uso del suelo en la cuenca de arroyo Limoeiro ubicados en las ciudades de Presidente Prudente y Álvarez Machado en el oeste de Sao Paulo. Esta evaluación se realizó mediante un sensor de imagen del Landsat TM 7 y el Sistema de Información Geográfica Idrisi. A continuación, las curvas de nivel de la cuenca fueran digitalizados y interpolados para obtener las clases de pendiente del área de estudio. Después, las clases pendiente fueran correlacionadas con el uso de la tierra con el fin de identificar los principales usos de la tierra en cada clase de pendiente. Se observó que la exploración agropecuaria y urbana son las principales ocupaciones de tierras en la cuenca. También se observó que las clases pendiente predominantes en la área de estudio son entre el 3 y 12 por ciento.O objetivo deste trabalho foi o levantamento do uso da terra na microbacia hidrográfica do Córrego Limoeiro situada nos municípios de Presidente Prudente e Álvares Machado no Oeste do Estado de São Paulo. O referido levantamento foi efetuado utilizando-se uma imagem do sensor TM do satélite Landsat 7 e o Sistema de Informações Geográficas Idrisi. O resultado do levantamento foi analisado estatisticamente através do índice kappa. Em seguida, digitalizaram-se as curvas de nível da microbacia que foram interpoladas para fornecer as classes de declive de toda a área estudada. Depois disso, cruzou-se as classes de declive com o uso da terra com a finalidade de verificar os principais usos da terra em cada classe de declive. Observou-se que a pecuária e a área urbanizada são as principais ocupações do solo na microbacia. Observou-se ainda que as classes de declive predominantes na área estudada são aquelas entre 3 e 12 por cento
